How To Quit Your Real Job

Image by Ed Yourdon via Flickr

I quit my real job years ago… of course everyone calls it a “Real” job because it’s what we are supposed to be doing.

Getting up every morning – and hitting the rush hour traffic.

It’s what pays the bills and it’s what our parents taught us to do – Right?

That scenario was not what my parents taught me… really.  Oh – they talked about having a JOB as a good thing… but they were both self-employed for my entire life.

Leaving behind a job you’ve become accustomed to is never easy and there are many reasons that people say goodbye to a job.

  • Some leave a job because they’ve outgrown the work and are no longer challenged mentally.
  • Others leave because of office politics or poor pay despite all their hard work.
  • A few leave a job because they’ve decided that it’s time to be their own boss.

The allure of making money from home attracts many people.Maybe that’s you and you’re planning a new and exciting future away from the same old grind but you’re not quite sure how to exit gracefully.

Never burn bridges. Though it’s tempting to finally get everything you’ve been holding in off your chest, you never know when you might need that former boss as a reference or as a networking opportunity, so make sure that you leave gracefully.

Give a two-week notice and clear everything out of your to-do box to make the transition easier for the next person who will fill your shoes. Gather all of the contact information from colleagues and customers so that you can stay in touch with those you like and also to form new loyalties in the future with your own business.

Remember that timing is important. While it’s great to dream, you can’t pay the mortgage with a dream. So get the finances in order before you wave adios to your boss. Plus, you don’t want the stress of finances nipping at your heels.

Work hard before you quit to pay a few months ahead on all of your utilities and credit cards and other financial obligations. Tuck away enough money in savings to get support yourself while your business is in the start up phase. You’ll be glad you don’t have that pressure.

Being your own boss is exciting, but it can also be trying if you’ve never been responsible for a business before. First, do your homework. Have a focused marketing plan for your business and put it to work.

Remember that most businesses don’t see profit overnight. But with a steady dedication you will succeed.

Don’t buy into the myth that you have to spend a lot of money to make money. Your business budget shouldn’t be spent on fancy gadgets for the office or advertising. Instead, look for all of the free avenues you can take to build your business.

Being your own boss can be wonderful or a pain in the neck. Not everyone is going to be “good at it”.  Yes – working for yourself and learning to make money from home has a powerful pull for most of us that just don’t want to play the “game” any longer.  Remember that it’s still work.

You may not have a JOB – but you still have lot’s of work to do and you will be working many long hours for little or no pay.

I love my work at home lifestyle... but it’s not for everyone.  There are days that I sleep in or take a nap – and yet I still have to push ahead late into the night to get my work done. Otherwise – all that “stuff” is still going to be waiting for me tomorrow.

The “To Do List Fairy” has never visited my house and magically erased all the little tasks that must be accomplished every day.

Life will get in the way… it happens.

What you must remember is that Your Business Is The Most Important Thing On Your Plate.  Don’t let anyone or anything get in your way of success.

Remember – I’m here for ya…

No Time For An Online Business

Image by Leo Reynolds via Flickr

How many times have we all said, “If only I had more time then I could get more done in my online business?” The solution is not getting more time – we all have the same amount. The key is to manage the time we do have and make it work more effectively for us.

Even if you think you don’t have time to take on anything else, you might be surprised to discover how much time you’re actually wasting during the day. You can start making money from home whether you hold down a full time job or not.

Sometimes when it comes to starting a business, many people have the mental picture that it’s all or nothing – that in order to be their own boss, they have to take the plunge, quit their day job and put all of their effort into building an online business.

I remember feeling this way… I had a real problem with feeling as if my “JOB” got in the way of my progress.

I also had a husband that didn’t want me to quit my “real” job. He was concerned that our life style – and ability to make the house payment – would suffer.

He is always the voice of reason in our house. I’m the dreamer – he is the one who keeps me somewhat grounded.

If you have a day job that pays the bills and provides you with health benefits, keep the job while you work on launching and growing your business part time.

You can get up an hour earlier in the mornings to work on your business.

You can spend your lunch hour working on the business.

Since your job will be online, you’ll be able to access it anywhere. If you commute to work via train or other method where someone else is in charge of driving, you can work on it then, too.

You can also temporarily give up the hours you used to spend sitting in front of the television.

You can give up one hour of sleep at night to work on the business and work two weekends a month.

I’ve had times when I don’t get much sleep – for weeks on end.  And I don’t miss all the TV shows I used to watch… It’s more important for me to spend that time focused on my future.

If you work  around your day job and stick with it, you can steadily increase your income with the online business until you can comfortably afford to let go of the job you now have.

Let’s suppose you’re in a position now where you can no longer wait to leave your day job – it’s become unbearable, the stress is going to wreak too much havoc, or there’s something to cause you abandon your current career now. Or… you find you are without a job (like my hubby when IBM forced him to retire early).

Suddenly, you find yourself having the same forty plus hours you gave at the office to work on your online business. Don’t waste that time…  If you work on  your online business only when you feel like it, you could lose valuable momentum. Let the excitement of your new business drive you and propel you forward.

When you can start working your online business full time, you’ll be able to devote your full attention the business needs to continually grow. Rather than squeezing it into the schedule, you’ll have the time you need.

It’s not so much about finding the time as it is taking the time and if you’ve always wanted to start your own online business, there’s no better time than this moment. Today will soon be yesterday and you won’t ever get that opportunity back.

I’m just not going to feel sorry for anyone who says they don’t have the time for making money online. No Way!  I won’t let anyone convince me that’s ever true.

Sounds more like an excuse to me.

I told you I was training a totally blog newbie the other day: WordPress Blog Training For Newbies.

I remember that she asked a question about “What do you write on your blog“?  She was curious about how I figured out what topics I “needed” to be writing about – not just what I felt like writing.  And sometimes we can’t “think” of what to write.

First – I MADE her understand that we all can’t just write about what we “think” someone should or want’s to read.  Sometimes that works if you are in your Creative Type mode.  But… you need to know that sometimes you will need to write about what others need to know.  (don’t worry – I’m getting to the explanation part)

It comes down to this:

Figure out what it is you “should” be writing about and then write it.

How do you know what to write about when you are staring at a blank screen?

We all have to Free options to get this info:

  1. Look at our own blog statistics
  2. Look for the keywords people are using to search for “what they want to read”.

Well.. I also have a third.  Look at your own email reply’s – comments on your blog – or use forums and other blog comments as fodder for your own blog.  That takes a bit more work than the first two.

When you have Google Analytics code on your blog – you get all sorts of information.. including what keywords someone typed in that led them to your blog.

If you don’t know how to set up Google Analytics – I’ve got a free report:  Analyze Website Traffic

Inside Google Analytics (one of my niche blogs) I can see that the number one keyword used to find the site for the last 30 days:

Easy.. I need to write an article about “Paint Colors For Craft Rooms” because I know I don’t have an article on my site with that “long tail keyword string” as a title.

Of course this blog is about “Choosing Paint Colors” so it’s a perfect fit. I know I will be writing an article my readers (or soon to be readers) want to read.

Let’s Look At This Another Way That Will Help With SEO

The keyword “paint colors for craft rooms” is not a highly searched long tail keyword string.  What if I wanted to write articles (if my blog was new) that had more chance of getting found by the search engines? (and ultimately real people)

I’d head over to http://adwords.google.com and find the keywords “lots of people” are using:

This search took less than 2 minutes and pulled in about 140 great ideas to write about – and these are topics people want to read!

Use Those Keywords In Your Blog Posts

Now you have a “topic” to write about… but don’t stray from the keyword.  Stop trying to get so creative in your blog titles – search engines won’t find your blog and people don’t use “creative” keywords to find what they want to know.

Use the keywords exactly how they are presented to you!

I used this analogy to explain the concept to my friend:

We used to use the Yellow Pages (phone book advertising) all the time.  Right?  We didn’t know the name of the business – just what type of business we were looking for.

We might be looking for a plumber or an Italian restaurant.  We then would turn to the pages with plumbers or restaurants listed.

Now days – we use the internet. So I might type in “name of city” and “plumber”.  That’s a keyword (long tail).

How does that relate to a blog?

Think about how YOU use the search engines?  Do you type in “going to the doctor today”?  I don’t think so…

When you are searching online for something specific… what do you type in?  Did you find the information you were looking for?

Back to one of my favorite quotes: “Stop trying to sell (or write) what you think others want to buy (or read) – Start writing about what you know they already are looking for”. Debra Conrad

You can still be creative in your writing – but “ya still gotta be found” online.  Otherwise – you are wasting your efforts.
