… You Might Be An Internet Marketer.
It’s true! Internet Marketers can get very addicted to Reality TV.
The addiction is not exclusive to marketers, but we are usually a group that is drawn to what is happening “Right Now”.
If you are watching TV more than a few hours a day… then you need an intervention. I did.
It was just 6 months ago… I was committed.
I only watched 1 hour of TV per day (maybe I would sneak in another hour right before bed). I was a fanatic. I had hours of great TV shows recorded with entire seasons worth of shows to catch up with.
Then it happened. I started watching the “Boob Box” again. I started with HGTV Design Star… and worked my way down to “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”. I loved “Flipping Out” and then I would navigate to other HGTV shows.
Of course… once you are watching – the shows like Grey’s Anatomy, CSI, Law and Order – and – Private Practice start catching my attention.
I’m easily distracted.
Once I set myself up in my recliner with laptop in hand… I felt like I was working. Watching TV and working at the same time seemed like such a great use of my time. NOT!
Finally – reality set’s in. Reality TV (or any television show) will suck your time. It started taking me twice as long to complete anything.
And… don’t even get me started talking about playing games. I’m a closet game freak… and once I get started – Watch out! I will try to beat everyone’s score.
Kelly McCausey talks about Putting the Kabosh on Online Distractions. She talks about how work at home entrepreneurs having time flexibility that can be detrimental to your business.
What makes a fuzzy situation even stickier is that I don’t really have set work hours. I work when I want to. I loaf when I want to. That’s the sort of life I like – but it can lead to self-delusion. Sometimes I may think I’m working, but I’m truly loafing. Then, when I think I’m loafing I may discover I’ve actually been working.
My goal now is to get back in the “No Distractions” groove. I vow to keep the TV to a minimum and “no games for me”. Well- maybe one more time with Bubble Spinner – A game I found through Kelly and wish I could stop!
It’s really not hard. I’ve learned to move my work area to a new spot. I’m back working in my backyard. I have a nice table and chair set up with a lamp for late nights. The weather isn’t a bother here in the Desert Southwest… and when I need to take a break… I can just look up and now I see my garden.
